Beach House Architects in Melbourne

NTF Architecture's approach to coastal architecture shines through in this transformation of a neglected weatherboard cottage into the ultimate beachside retreat, perfectly embodying our commitment to preserving the quintessence of coastal living. Nestled gracefully on the Mornington Peninsula, this project serves as a prime example of their dedication to crafting unique and harmonious design outcomes.

Our clients, in search of the ideal coastal sanctuary, discovered their haven on this expansive, sloping site. With young children who thrive in the great outdoors, their vision was to offer their family the same cherished coastal experiences they had treasured in their own youth. Project Director George Fortey, recalls their desire, saying, "They wanted their children to have the same experiences they had growing up at the coast."

Applying Contemporary Architectural Design Elements to a Charming Period Home.

While it might have been simpler to raze the existing period home and begin anew, both the clients and NTF Architecture were drawn to the enduring charm of the past. "The simple beach shack is fast becoming extinct in some of Victoria's coastal hotspots," notes George. Their mission was clear: retain the character of the existing cottage while infusing it with contemporary elements like space, simplicity, and charm.

Creating Connection Between Old And New

Instead of embarking on a complete reconstruction, we removed an ad hoc lean-to and embraced the house with a verandah, creating a seamless connection between old and new. At the rear, a modern living pavilion emerged, anchored to the site by a new double sided brick chimney housing an outdoor fireplace. The meticulous landscaping by Peachy Green Garden Architecture complemented this transformation beautifully.

The sloping site, though presenting its own set of challenges, became a wellspring of inspiration for NTF Architecture. George explains, "It provided the opportunity to step the new floor space down the site." The introduction of stairs facilitated a visual separation between the sleeping and living areas, ingeniously housing a separate bunk room for the kids beneath the deck.

Minimal Palette Application

Inside, a fresh and minimal palette was employed, featuring elements such as white groove panelling, handmade Japanese tiles, and raw oak timber. "Being a weekend house, we stripped the interior back to the essentials, with simple unadorned rooms," remarks George. This design approach ensures that the focus remains on the natural beauty of the coastal surroundings.

The property itself offers an array of amenities, from a pool and diving board to a barbecue, tennis court, in-ground trampoline, and a basketball ring. As George aptly states, "It's impossible not to have a good time at this house. Summer is sorted, no matter what age you are."

In the capable hands of NTF Architecture, this once-neglected weatherboard property has been transformed into a coastal haven that seamlessly marries the nostalgia of the past with the modern comforts of the present. It's a testament to their unwavering commitment to creating living spaces that embrace the essence of coastal living, where every day feels like a celebration.

This remarkable beach house stands as a shining example of our approach to coastal architecture and beach house living. With its seamless fusion of the past and present, it captures a relaxed design aesthetic that harks back to the beach holidays of times past. In its design, we see a reflection of NTF Architecture's unwavering commitment to preserving the essence of coastal living, where the tranquillity of the sea and the charm of beachside nostalgia harmoniously coexist. It is a testament to our vision, transforming a neglected property into a haven of timeless beauty and serenity—a place where the whispers of the waves and the warmth of the sun provide an everlasting sense of solace and delight.
